Team size and developer activity at crypto startups

How Recent Funding counts the people on a crypto startup's team page and the developers committing to its public GitHub, what those numbers can and cannot tell you, and every crypto company that has them.

Funding tells you what a startup raised. It doesn't tell you how many people work there or whether anyone is shipping code. Recent Funding now publishes two signals for crypto companies that help with those questions: team_size, the people listed on the company's own team page, and active_devs_90d, the developers committing to its public GitHub.

Coverage is thin. In the snapshot of September 26, 2026, 48 of 553 crypto companies have a team count and 101 have GitHub activity. Only 7 have both. That is too few to describe "the typical crypto startup", so this post explains the method and lists every company with data.

How team size is counted

The enrichment script (scripts/enrich-team.mjs) starts from the company's website:

1. It loads the homepage, then up to five candidate pages on the same host. These are links whose path looks like a team page (/team, /about, /about-us, /company, /people, /founders, /contributors, /who-we-are) plus /team and /about.
2. On each page it counts distinct linkedin.com/in/ profile links, since a person card on a team page almost always links to one.
3. It keeps the page with the most profiles, and only if it has at least two. That page becomes team_source_url.

Pages on another host don't count, so a /team link that redirects to LinkedIn is ignored. When the stored "website" is a social profile (LinkedIn, X, Telegram, Discord, Medium, GitHub, Linktree, Notion, Substack), the script skips it, because counting there would measure the social network, not the team. Only the count is stored, never names. Sites that render in the browser are loaded in headless Chrome when it is available.

The script only looks at crypto companies with a website. 457 of 553 have one in this snapshot.

How developer activity is counted

The script also looks for a GitHub organization or user linked from the homepage, or one already on the company's record. That becomes github_org. Then:

1. It takes the five most recently pushed repositories that are not forks, not archived, and were pushed in the last 90 days.
2. It reads commits from the last 90 days in each, up to 100 commits per repository.
3. It counts distinct commit authors by GitHub login, or by email when there is no login. Bots don't count: [bot] accounts, Dependabot, GitHub Actions, emails containing bot@, and the noreply@github.com address are excluded.

The result is active_devs_90d. Every run adds a new evidence row, so the figure builds a history. The API serves the latest one.

What these numbers can and can't tell you

Team size is a lower bound on the people a company chooses to list. It can undercount (people without a LinkedIn link, or engineers left off an about page) and overcount (advisors, investors, or former staff shown on the same page). It is only as fresh as the page. For a few companies, the page with the most profile links was the homepage or a page that isn't a team page at all. Follow the link in the table to see what was counted.

Active developers only sees public code. A team that works in private repositories shows 0. So can an org linked from the site that belongs to a community project rather than the company. The five-repository and 100-commit limits can undercount large, busy orgs. A 0 means no human commits in the public repos checked, not that nobody is building.

Neither number measures headcount, and neither should be compared across companies without opening the source.

The range is 0 to 23 developers in 90 days. Dagon has the most (23), read from the inkwell-finance organization, whose name doesn't match the company's, so check the link. Counts first published here for CryptoMines (35) and Anodos (33) were removed: they came from base and XRPLF, the Base network's and the XRP Ledger Foundation's organizations, which our data hygiene checks flagged. Open the GitHub link before reading any count as a company's own team. Several orgs show 0 developers in the window, which is why a GitHub link alone says little about a company.

Sort by either signal. Companies without a value come last, so stop at the first null:
