Crypto startup leaderboard: 2026 year to date

Which crypto startups had the best 2026 so far? There is no single right answer, so this post ranks Recent Funding's crypto companies on four separate measures. Each one is public and has a source you can check:

Capital raised in 2026: the sum of the company's funding rounds announced from January 1 to September 26, 2026.
Smart-account follows: how many investor and founder accounts that Frontrun VC tracks follow the company on X.
Developer activity: distinct people committing to the company's public GitHub in the last 90 days.
Team size: people listed on the company's own team page.

There is no combined score. Each list ranks only the companies that have data for that measure, and each list shows its sample size. The four samples are very different in size, and a score that blended them would hide how thin some of them are. A short momentum view at the end counts how many top-25 lists each company makes, and shows the ranks behind that count.

All figures come from the Recent Funding snapshot of September 26, 2026, which has 553 crypto companies. The same rankings are live in the app and the API.

How to read these lists

Ranks share ties. Two companies with the same value get the same rank, and the next rank is skipped (1, 2, 2, 4). A top-25 list can have more than 25 rows when there is a tie at 25.
Only companies with data are ranked. A company missing from a list may have no data, not a low value.
Every value links to its source. Amounts link to the article or listing they came from. Follow counts link to Frontrun VC, developer counts to the GitHub account that was read, and team counts to the page that was counted.
"Crypto" means Recent Funding's crypto flag. It includes established companies such as exchanges and stablecoin issuers, not only early-stage startups.

Capital raised in 2026

156 crypto companies have at least one 2026 round with an amount and a source link, 156 rounds in all. Rounds with an amount but no source link are left out of every total. The number of such rounds in this snapshot is 0.

Polymarket leads by a wide margin with $1B, from its Dropstab listing. Elliptic ($120M) and OpenRouter ($113M) follow. Before quoting these figures, keep in mind:

Each total is effectively one round. The number of companies with more than one 2026 round on record is 0. Recent Funding usually records a company's latest round, so a company that raised twice this year may be undercounted.
Large figures need a second look. An earlier review of Recent Funding's data found valuations and acquisition prices stored as raises. Strategic investments by corporates also count as rounds in the sources. Open the source link before you rely on a nine- or ten-figure amount.
Not all of these are startups. Circle Internet Group is a public company and Payward is Kraken's parent. They are in the dataset because crypto fundraising trackers list their rounds.
Announced, not closed. The date is when the round was reported, which can be weeks after it closed.

Smart-account follows

Frontrun VC tracks a set of investor and founder accounts on X and reports how many of them follow a company. Only 13 crypto companies have that count, so this is the thinnest list here.

USD.AI has the most (64), followed by Sapiom (51) and Orbio (38). The count is today's value, not the number of follows gained in 2026. Frontrun also reports new follows in the last seven days, but the number of crypto companies with that figure is 1, too few to rank. Where a company has no Frontrun post on record, the link goes to Frontrun VC's site.

Developer activity

The count is distinct human commit authors in the last 90 days, across the five most recently pushed repositories of the company's GitHub account. 101 crypto companies have a count.

Read the GitHub columns before the number. The enrichment script takes the GitHub account linked from the company's site (or already on its record), and sometimes that is a framework, a blockchain, or an auditor rather than the company. An earlier version of this table ranked CryptoMines first with 35 developers and Anodos second with 33, but those counts came from base (the Base network's organization) and XRPLF (the XRP Ledger Foundation). Our data hygiene checks caught them, and they were removed along with counts read from auditors' and dependencies' accounts; the enrichment now prefers the account that matches the company and skips auditors and chain organizations. In 4 of the rows above, the account name still doesn't match the company's name, website, or X handle. Some of those are the company's own account under another name (ParaSwap's is now VeloraDEX), so open the link. The count only sees public code, so a team that works in private repositories shows few or none. Team size and developer activity at crypto startups explains the method.

Team size

The count is distinct LinkedIn profile links on the company's own team or about page. 48 crypto companies have one.

SpoutFi and Wanaka Farm share first place with 19 people each. A team page can list advisors and investors, and can leave out engineers, so treat this as the size a company chooses to show.

Momentum: companies on more than one list

A company is counted once for each list where it ranks in the top 25. Here is every company that makes at least two lists, with its rank on each list (a dash means it is not in that top 25).

10 companies make two or more lists. Only Sapiom makes three. The smart-follows list has fewer than 25 companies, so every company with a Frontrun count is in its "top 25" automatically. The developer ranks carry the caveats above: Phi Wallet's was read from twbs, the Bootstrap project, so its second list is doubtful. Treat this view as a pointer to companies worth a closer look, not as a ranking of success.

What these lists don't show

Token prices. Many crypto companies have a token, and "year-to-date gains" often means its price change. Recent Funding doesn't publish token prices yet. The free price APIs we reviewed (CoinGecko, DefiLlama, and CoinMarketCap) either don't license commercial display on their free tiers or forbid passing derived data on through another API, which is how Recent Funding serves its data.
Companies that failed or went quiet. Recent Funding lists companies it has discovered and still considers active. Records found to be duplicates, people, or non-startups are hidden. So the lists describe surviving, visible companies, and they say nothing about how often crypto startups succeed.
Revenue, users, or returns. None of the four measures is a business outcome. Capital raised is money in, not value created. Follows, commits, and team pages are activity signals.
Change over time. Only capital raised is tied to 2026. The other three are the latest values, not gains made during the year.

Deal flow in 2026: why investors keep finding the same startups, and what early signals actually help

Ask seed investors what is hard about their job and sourcing comes up early: too many pitches, too few of them good, and the good ones seen by every other fund at the same time. This post collects what investors, researchers and vendors said about deal flow in public in 2024 to 2026, with links to each source. It then walks through one way of finding companies earlier, signal-based sourcing, with Frontrun VC as the example, and ends with what Recent Funding's own data shows and a checklist.

Two cautions first. Many of the sources below are written by companies that sell sourcing tools, including Frontrun and Recent Funding; they are marked "vendor". And none of this is a survey we ran: where a figure appears, it is the source's figure.

The pain points

1. Volume and noise

Most of what a fund looks at, it will not fund. Patrick Newton of Form Ventures wrote in March 2026 that at pre-seed and seed "funds generally report that they invest in somewhere between 0.5% (one in a 200) and 0.1% (one in a thousand) of the startups they look at", which means "you can spend literally weeks at the task, without generating anything of value" (Form Ventures). At the small end of the market the tooling often doesn't keep up. A builder who interviewed angels on Hacker News said their pipeline is "almost always a Notion database that quietly died or an inbox with a starred folder system", in a workflow that is "high inbound noise, low signal" (Hacker News).

2. Everyone sees the same deals

Inbound deal flow tends to be shared deal flow. Pegasus Angel Accelerator put it this way in October 2024: inbound opportunities "are usually startups already on the radar of other firms", and "relying on passive deal flow leads to overcrowded application pools" (Pegasus). In Affinity's 2025 benchmark report (vendor), "42% of investors cite competition as the biggest factor impacting deal flow" (Affinity). Harmonic (vendor) makes the same point from the sourcing side: "The team that waits for public announcements competes with companies that every other firm has already identified, working from information everyone has" (Harmonic).

3. Fewer, more concentrated rounds raise the cost of being late

The data doesn't show that every round closes faster. It shows that capital is concentrating. Carta's Peter Walker, speaking to Sierra Ventures in March 2026: "The typical lead investor used to take about 50% of a seed round. The median is now 60%, and in roughly one in ten cases last year, a single investor took the entire round" (Sierra Ventures). CRV reported that in 2025 overall "deal count fell 17 percent", and that "the median time between seed close and Series A close has stretched to 20 months" (CRV). With fewer allocations and a larger lead share, a fund that meets a company after its round is set has less room to get in.

4. Warm introductions and network bias

Networks still decide much of what gets seen. Affinity (vendor) writes that "for most VCs, around 60% of closed deals stem from leads found in your network" (Affinity). A Beta Boom study of 843 seed investments by ten top firms from 2018 to 2023 found they "invested more frequently in seed-stage startups led by founders from top-10 universities, by a margin of 51% to 49%", with some firms far higher (Beta Boom, January 2024). A sourcing process that runs on introductions inherits whoever the network already knows.

5. Stealth companies are found late

Harmonic (vendor) argues that "identifying a founder during stealth gives an investor weeks or months of lead time before the rest of the market knows an opportunity exists" (Harmonic). Jurgis Pocius, writing about an AI agent that found a pre-seed company before its Demo Day, described the standard tool stack as "databases that index information after it's public" (Automated Alpha, February 2026). Both are arguments for earlier signals from people who build them, so read them as a description of the problem rather than proof of a fix.

6. Data quality and stale records

This is the theme with the least outside evidence we could find: few investors write publicly about wrong figures in the databases they pay for. Harmonic's comparison page (vendor, about a competitor) describes PitchBook as having a "3 to 4 month company-level refresh reported by users" (Harmonic), which we could not check. What we can document is our own experience, in the data section below: automated merging of startup sources produces valuations stored as raises, totals stored as rounds, and founders stored as companies.

7. Tool sprawl

Evertrace (vendor) cites "a 2025 survey by Decile Group" for the claim that "the average VC firm now uses 8-12 software tools daily, up from 3-5 just three years ago" (Evertrace). We did not find the underlying survey. Harmonic's site shows no prices, and PitchBook's and Crunchbase's pricing pages refused our requests, so the cost of a stack is hard to compare from the outside.

8. Signals versus vanity metrics

The easy-to-scrape metrics are the easiest to inflate. TechCrunch reported in May 2026 that some AI startups report contracted revenue as ARR; one VC said "Investors can't call it out. Everyone has a company monetizing CARR as ARR" (TechCrunch). GitHub stars have the same problem: a Carnegie Mellon study presented at ICSE 2026 found "approximately 6 million fake stars distributed across 18,617 repositories", and Redpoint's Jordan Segall is quoted saying "many VCs write internal scraping programs to identify fast growing GitHub projects for sourcing" (summary of the study).

9. Crypto adds its own sourcing channels and filters

Crypto sourcing leans on public, scheduled channels. Colosseum's accelerator page says "winning a primary hackathon or being selected through Eternal is a better filter for entrepreneurial talent than a written application, personal connections, or other traditional sourcing methods" (Colosseum). Crypto investors also describe a market that has become more selective: "Token-first, product-later is largely finished", said Richard Galvin of Digital Asset Capital Management, and Strobe Ventures' Thomas Klocanas said "diligence is real, and check sizes are disciplined" (The Block, August 2026). insights4vc counted 1,660 crypto venture deals in 2025 (insights4vc). We found no recent public source from a crypto fund on screening anonymous teams, so that concern is left out here.

How signal-based sourcing works: Frontrun VC as the worked example

Most startup databases record events after they happen: a round is announced, a company registers, a team page goes up. Signal-based sourcing tries to move earlier by watching behaviour that tends to come before those events. Frontrun VC is the clearest public example of one version of this, the "who is following whom" model, and it is also one of Recent Funding's sources, so it is worth describing in detail.

Disclosure: Recent Funding imports Frontrun's public startup database, site feed and posts on X as three of its sources (frontrun-startupdb, frontrun-site, frontrun-tweet). Frontrun did not review this post.

What it watches

In its own words, Frontrun "tracks the follow graphs of 2,000+ top investors across AI, tech, and crypto on X and flags companies the moment several converge on the same account" (frontrun.vc). Its public trending page puts the tracked set at 2,900+ investors and describes the mechanism: "when several of them start following the same small company in the same week, that convergence usually happens months before a round is announced." Its machine-readable facts file (updated September 17, 2026) says it "continuously diffs the follow lists" of those investors and records each flag "with a date and follower-count-at-flag". The tracked-investor figure differs between pages (a July post said 1,000+), which most likely reflects growth over time.

The same file describes a second layer for people: founders "building in stealth" are flagged from an X bio change into founder language, a LinkedIn move into a stealth role, or investor convergence on a person with no company yet.

How it sells that signal

Plans. Its pricing docs list three: Starter (the web app, 100 tracked accounts, daily reports, a 7-day free trial), Pro (250 tracked accounts plus API and MCP access with a monthly credit allowance) and a custom Enterprise plan. The prices are on that page.
Products. Daily discovery reports, a live feed, a watchlist with alerts, a searchable database of every company that has surfaced for the accounts a user tracks, a REST API (docs), and an MCP server so AI agents can query it. The public trending page shows counts only; "who followed is in the product."
Customers. Its solutions page targets crypto VCs, solo GPs and angels, accelerators, AI and deep-tech investors, and platforms building agents. We found no named customers on the site. Frontrun links to a TrustMRR listing that reports 80 active subscriptions on September 26, 2026, which suggests a self-serve business of individual investors and small teams rather than enterprise contracts. That is our reading, not Frontrun's claim.
Positioning. Frontrun calls its data "pre-round behavioral signal, not retrospective data like PitchBook or Crunchbase". Its crypto page says crypto was its origin, and argues that "by the time a token or protocol is on CryptoRank, DeFiLlama, or Crunchbase, the pre-seed is closed".

What it claims about lead time

Frontrun publishes "receipts": companies it flagged before their round was announced. Its July 27, 2026 roundup, 46 startups we flagged before they raised, reports 46 rounds with an average lead of 83 days and a longest lead of 213. It states three rules for that list: a 7-day minimum lead, no backfilled dates for companies added in bulk imports, and a linked source for every round.

An independent review by insights4vc, Who Sees the Company First? (August 20, 2026), called Frontrun "the clearest specialist built around this idea" and named the limit of any receipts list: "There is no public denominator showing how many signals led nowhere ... It demonstrates lead time, not whether a fund using the signal would consistently make better investments." The same piece notes that the approach depends on X's API terms, and that "signal confidence generally rises as earliness falls". That limit applies to every early-signal product, including Recent Funding's use of the data below.

Other approaches

Signal-based tools differ mainly in what they watch. These descriptions are each company's own, from its site on September 26, 2026:

These are different bets rather than better or worse versions of one product: a follow graph sees attention, a people graph sees hiring and departures, and a round database sees what already closed. Most funds that use any of them use more than one.

What Recent Funding's data shows

Recent Funding is a directory of recently funded and early-stage startups, crypto first. The numbers below come from the snapshot of September 26, 2026: 1575 active companies, 553 of them crypto. They describe this dataset, not the market.

How early Frontrun flags companies

112 companies have a days_early figure from Frontrun: the days between Frontrun's flag and the round becoming public. It ranges from 7 to 225 days. The low end is consistent with the 7-day minimum lead Frontrun applies to its published receipts. Frontrun's own July list (46 rounds, 83 days on average) is a different set of companies, so the two are not directly comparable.

For 107 of those 112 companies, days_early equals the gap between flagged_at and the date of the latest round Recent Funding holds, so the figure is at least consistent with the round date Recent Funding holds. Three limits matter:

Small sample, thin crypto coverage. Only 4 of the 112 are crypto companies. Most crypto companies on Recent Funding come from crypto fundraising trackers, which carry no Frontrun signals.
Only hits are counted. A flagged company that never raised has no days_early, so this table shows how early the flags came when a round followed, not how often a flag leads to a round. That is the denominator problem insights4vc described.
Frontrun's numbers, as reported. Recent Funding stores days_early as Frontrun published it and does not recompute it.

Frontrun's startup database also gives 742 companies a smart-follow count (how many tracked investors follow the company), ranging from 3 to 196. A follow is attention, not an investment.

How much of the directory has a verified funding source

536 of 1575 companies have a known amount for their latest round. 527 of those link to the page the amount came from, and the other 9 are shown without a link and left out of every table on this blog. Among crypto companies, 162 have a linked amount. Everyone else in the directory is known from a discovery source (a tracker listing, an accelerator portfolio, a Frontrun flag) without a published amount. For early-stage companies that is normal: most are found before or without a disclosed round.

Accelerator pipelines surface companies before their rounds

Accelerator cohorts are one of the few sources that name companies early and on a schedule. Recent Funding reads them two ways: portfolio imports from programs whose terms allow it (source keys starting accel:), and a batch watcher that reads programs' X accounts and blogs for cohort announcements (accel-watch:). The README describes both.

575 companies in the snapshot are tied to an accelerator or program, 379 of them crypto. 520 of those have no known round amount on Recent Funding: the directory knows about them from the cohort, not from a raise.

A cohort listing is not a funding signal on its own; many programs invest small, standard amounts and not every company raises afterwards. It is a dated, public, first-party list of companies, which is what early screening needs. Two companies above, kash (Sui Hydropower) and CRSHMARKET (Monad's Nitro), came from crypto programs but carry crypto = no, a classification gap of the kind the crypto-flag-mismatch hygiene rule exists to catch; a crypto=true filter alone would miss them.

Data quality is a deal-flow problem

Any sourcing process inherits the errors of its sources. Recent Funding keeps a hygiene log (HYGIENE.md in its repository) of every data problem it has hit, the cause, and the rule that now checks for it. These are entries from September 2026, with the counts as logged:

Valuations, acquisition prices and trading volume stored as raises. Upstream scrapers stored any dollar figure near a company name: a stablecoin limit quoted in a tweet, an acquisition price, trading volume, a valuation. A review corrected 14 rounds and moved valuations to a separate field.
Figures from other people's tweets. 8 of those 14 bad amounts came from X posts by third parties mentioning another company's numbers. Frontrun's own raise posts are now trusted; other accounts' tweets are flagged for review.
Totals stored as one round. Headlines that report cumulative funding were read as a single round (Gradium, Neo Security and Aalo).
The wrong company's news. Generic or one-word names matched other companies' headlines; 42 wrong headlines are now stored as rejections so they cannot return.
Founder accounts stored as the company. Scrapers took the account that tweeted about a company as the company's X account; review swapped or unlinked 6. People and a VC firm had been stored as companies and are now excluded from the API.
Websites that were not websites. 46 companies had a LinkedIn, Linktree, Telegram or Discord page as their website, and one had an Instagram page.
Placeholder dates and stale stages. 8 rounds were dated 1970-01-01 (a Unix-epoch zero), and 43 companies were stuck at stage "unknown" although their latest round had a stage.

None of these are exotic. They are what happens when several sources are merged automatically, and each one would mislead a screen: a valuation read as a seed round makes a company look like a mega-round, and a founder's account makes follower signals point at the wrong entity. The fix in each case was a rule that keeps checking, not a one-off cleanup.

A practical checklist for a deal-flow process

This is a checklist, not a ranking of tools. Each item follows from a pain point above.

Sources

List where your deals came from last year, and how many came from warm introductions. If one channel dominates, the rest of this list is where to add coverage.
Add at least one scheduled first-party list: accelerator cohorts and demo days, hackathon winners, grant programs. They are dated and public.
Add at least one early-signal feed (investor attention, hiring, GitHub activity) and at least one round database, knowing that each sees a different stage of a company's life.

Signals

Record the date you first saw each company and where. Without it you cannot measure your own lead time, or a vendor's.
Treat any early signal as a reason to look, not a reason to invest. Track how many flags led nowhere, since vendors rarely publish that denominator.
Prefer signals you can check: a team page, commits in a GitHub org that belongs to the company, a cohort announcement.

Verification

Never screen on an amount without its source. Check whether it is a round, a total, a valuation or an acquisition.
Check the entity: is the X account the company's or a founder's? Is the website the company's own domain?
For crypto, check whether a "raise" is equity, a token sale or a grant, and whether the team is public.

Limits of this post

The pain points are what investors and vendors say in public; they are not a survey we ran.
Frontrun's figures are Frontrun's. Recent Funding republishes days_early and smart follows as reported, and uses them as one source among several.
Recent Funding's figures describe 1575 companies in one snapshot, crypto-heavy and incomplete. Coverage depends on which sources allow import, and some accelerators' portfolios are never fetched because their terms forbid it.

Frontrun stealth builders: startups flagged before they announced a raise

Frontrun VC watches which investors and founders follow new accounts on X, and flags startups before they announce a round. Recent Funding imports Frontrun's records alongside its crypto fundraising sources, and the API now returns Frontrun's signals on every company. This post covers what those signals are, which companies have them in the snapshot of September 26, 2026, and how to query them.

The short version on coverage: 112 of 1575 companies have a days_early figure, but only 4 of the 553 crypto companies do. Crypto comes first below, but 4 companies are a list, not a trend, so the post also covers all sectors.

What "flagged" and "smart follows" mean

Every number here is Frontrun's. Recent Funding stores it as Frontrun reported it and does not recompute it.

You can check days_early against the rest of the record. For 107 of the 112 companies, it equals the number of days from flagged_at to the date of the company's latest round on Recent Funding. The rest are Aalo Atomics, Liquid Compute, Ouinex, Project Eleven and StableStock. For these, Recent Funding's latest round is probably a different round or date from the one Frontrun measured. Use /api/v1/companies/{slug} to see every round.

Where the fields come from matters for coverage. In this snapshot, every company with days_early came from Frontrun's site feed (the frontrun-site source), and every company with smart_follows came from Frontrun's startup database (frontrun-startupdb). Most crypto companies on Recent Funding come from Dropstab, CoinCarp and Crypto-Fundraising.info instead, and those sources carry no Frontrun signals. That is why crypto coverage is thin:

Sapiom was flagged 180 days before its round was public, the longest lead among crypto companies. Cari Network follows at 168 days, then MNX at 153 and River Markets at 117. USD.AI has the most smart follows among crypto companies (64) but no days_early figure.

A missing days_early does not mean Frontrun was late. It means Frontrun's record for the company has no such figure.

All sectors: how early were companies flagged?

Across all 112 companies with a figure, days_early ranges from 7 to 225 days.

This counts only companies whose raise became public. A company Frontrun flagged that never announced a round has no days_early, so the table says nothing about how often a flag leads to a raise.

Two things to keep in mind when reading this list:

Not every flagged company is a stealth startup. The full list includes established companies such as Gumroad and Upbit Global, and a record for Frontrun's own site, listed as frontrun.
The crypto flag is Recent Funding's classification, and it misses some. Upbit Global (a cryptocurrency exchange), Ouinex (a decentralized exchange) and StableStock (stablecoin infrastructure) appear here with crypto = no. To be thorough, search all sectors, not just crypto=true.

Smart follows

742 companies have a smart-follow count, from 3 to 196 tracked accounts. Only 13 of them are crypto companies. 42 companies have both a smart-follow count and a days_early figure.

A high count shows that many of the accounts Frontrun tracks follow a company. It does not show why they follow it, and following is not investing. 15 companies have a trending_rank and a 7-day follow count (15 with new_follows_7d). Of those, 1 is crypto: Tare.

Pull this from the API

The API sorts by the new fields, with companies that lack a value last. It has no "has a value" filter, so stop reading when the field turns null.

Team size and developer activity at crypto startups

Funding tells you what a startup raised. It doesn't tell you how many people work there or whether anyone is shipping code. Recent Funding now publishes two signals for crypto companies that help with those questions: team_size, the people listed on the company's own team page, and active_devs_90d, the developers committing to its public GitHub.

Coverage is thin. In the snapshot of September 26, 2026, 48 of 553 crypto companies have a team count and 101 have GitHub activity. Only 7 have both. That is too few to describe "the typical crypto startup", so this post explains the method and lists every company with data.

How team size is counted

The enrichment script (scripts/enrich-team.mjs) starts from the company's website:

It loads the homepage, then up to five candidate pages on the same host. These are links whose path looks like a team page (/team, /about, /about-us, /company, /people, /founders, /contributors, /who-we-are) plus /team and /about.
On each page it counts distinct linkedin.com/in/ profile links, since a person card on a team page almost always links to one.
It keeps the page with the most profiles, and only if it has at least two. That page becomes team_source_url.

Pages on another host don't count, so a /team link that redirects to LinkedIn is ignored. When the stored "website" is a social profile (LinkedIn, X, Telegram, Discord, Medium, GitHub, Linktree, Notion, Substack), the script skips it, because counting there would measure the social network, not the team. Only the count is stored, never names. Sites that render in the browser are loaded in headless Chrome when it is available.

The script only looks at crypto companies with a website. 457 of 553 have one in this snapshot.

How developer activity is counted

The script also looks for a GitHub organization or user linked from the homepage, or one already on the company's record. That becomes github_org. Then:

It takes the five most recently pushed repositories that are not forks, not archived, and were pushed in the last 90 days.
It reads commits from the last 90 days in each, up to 100 commits per repository.
It counts distinct commit authors by GitHub login, or by email when there is no login. Bots don't count: [bot] accounts, Dependabot, GitHub Actions, emails containing bot@, and the noreply@github.com address are excluded.

The result is active_devs_90d. Every run adds a new evidence row, so the figure builds a history. The API serves the latest one.

What these numbers can and can't tell you

Team size is a lower bound on the people a company chooses to list. It can undercount (people without a LinkedIn link, or engineers left off an about page) and overcount (advisors, investors, or former staff shown on the same page). It is only as fresh as the page. For a few companies, the page with the most profile links was the homepage or a page that isn't a team page at all. Follow the link in the table to see what was counted.

Active developers only sees public code. A team that works in private repositories shows 0. So can an org linked from the site that belongs to a community project rather than the company. The five-repository and 100-commit limits can undercount large, busy orgs. A 0 means no human commits in the public repos checked, not that nobody is building.

Neither number measures headcount, and neither should be compared across companies without opening the source.

The range is 0 to 23 developers in 90 days. Dagon has the most (23), read from the inkwell-finance organization, whose name doesn't match the company's, so check the link. Counts first published here for CryptoMines (35) and Anodos (33) were removed: they came from base and XRPLF, the Base network's and the XRP Ledger Foundation's organizations, which our data hygiene checks flagged. Open the GitHub link before reading any count as a company's own team. Several orgs show 0 developers in the window, which is why a GitHub link alone says little about a company.

The crypto startup API: endpoints for stealth signals, teams, and raises

Recent Funding's API is free, read-only, and needs no key. This guide covers the requests that matter for crypto: stealth signals from Frontrun VC, team and developer counts, funding rounds with their sources, and accelerator filters. Every example below returned HTTP 200 from the live API when this post was built, and the build checks them again whenever the data is refreshed. The JSON excerpts come from real responses, trimmed to the relevant fields.

In the snapshot of September 26, 2026, 553 of the 1575 companies on Recent Funding are crypto companies. The general API guide covers paging and errors in more depth.

Crypto coverage of these fields is small: 4 crypto companies have days_early and 13 have smart_follows. Across all sectors, the figures are 112 and 742. So drop crypto=true to see the whole list:

amount_usd is a decimal string. source_url is where the amount came from, and source_provider says how it was found (scan, google-news, website, or agent-review). Add min_amount for larger rounds only:

by_industry lists every industry slug you can pass to industry.

When a request is wrong

An unknown sort or parameter returns a 400 with the allowed values instead of silently ignoring it. For example, sort=trending_rank is not a sort:

trending_rank and new_follows_7d are returned on every company, but you can't sort by them.

Using the data

Link every amount to its raise_source_url or source_url, every team count to its team_source_url, and every developer count to its GitHub org. Keep automated traffic modest and cache responses. The API docs and openapi.json list every parameter and field, including the crypto signals.

Why use Recent Funding to track crypto startups

There are plenty of crypto fundraising trackers. This post doesn't claim Recent Funding is the biggest or the best. It lays out what the pipeline does, with the counts from the snapshot of September 26, 2026, so you can decide whether it fits your work. In that snapshot, Recent Funding lists 1575 companies, and 553 of them are crypto companies.

1. Every published raise links to its source

A funding figure on Recent Funding is a link to the page it came from. The API returns that page as raise_source_url on companies and source_url on rounds, along with raise_provider, which says how the amount was found. This blog enforces the same rule: its build fails if a dollar figure isn't a link to its source.

164 crypto companies have an amount for their latest round, and 162 of those have a source link. Amounts without one are left out of the blog. Where the crypto amounts came from:

2. Review corrections take out numbers that aren't raises

Fundraising feeds and headlines mix raises up with other numbers. A review on September 25, 2026 found valuations, acquisition prices, debt, trading volume and figures quoted in tweets stored as funding rounds. The review script moves a valuation to a separate field, replaces a wrong amount with the real one when it is known, and otherwise clears it. That way the site shows "unknown" rather than a wrong number. Each correction keeps the previous value, the verdict, a note and a source in an evidence row, so it can be audited and rolled back.

The news enrichment rejects headlines about debt, loans, credit facilities, IPOs, grants, token sales and buybacks. It also flags large early-stage amounts that review hasn't confirmed yet.

3. Frontrun early flags

Recent Funding imports Frontrun VC's records, and the API returns Frontrun's signals: flagged_at, days_early (days flagged before the raise was public), and smart_follows (tracked investors and founders following the company on X). 112 companies have a days_early figure and 742 have a smart-follow count. For crypto, it is 4 and 13, so these signals are more useful across all sectors than for crypto alone today. Frontrun stealth builders has the full list.

4. Team and developer signals

For crypto companies with a website, an enrichment script counts the people listed on the company's own team page and the developers committing to its public GitHub in the last 90 days, excluding bots. Every figure links to the page or GitHub org it was counted on. Coverage is early: 48 crypto companies have a team count and 101 have developer activity. 5. Several crypto sources in one record

Recent Funding scans Dropstab, CoinCarp, Crypto-Fundraising.info and Frontrun VC. When more than one source lists a company, sources and source_links record each of them. Two sources that spell a name differently can still produce a duplicate. Crypto companies per source:

Coverage of the new signals is thin, as the counts above show.
Stage labels come from the sources, and 398 crypto companies have no stage.
The crypto flag is a classification, and it misses some companies with crypto products.

How Recent Funding sources and verifies startup funding data

Recent Funding tracks recently funded startups. On September 26, 2026 it listed 1575 active companies, and 536 of them had a known amount for their latest round. This post explains where those records come from, how an amount gets attached to a company, and what we do when an amount turns out to be wrong. Everything here describes Recent Funding's code as of that date.

The short version

Companies are discovered by scanning startup and crypto fundraising sources.
An amount is either taken from the source listing itself or found later by an enrichment pipeline that reads the company's website and news headlines.
Every amount keeps a link to the page it came from. The site shows it as a SOURCE link, the API returns it as raise_source_url, and every figure on this blog links to it.
Wrong amounts get corrected or cleared by a review step. Each correction is recorded with the previous value so it can be audited and undone.

Where companies come from

Each time a source lists a company, Recent Funding stores a discovery record with the source name, the source URL, and the raw listing. A company found by several sources keeps all of them. These are the sources in the snapshot behind this post, with the number of companies each one listed:

The UI names the scanned sources as Frontrun VC, Crypto-Fundraising.info, Dropstab, and CoinCarp. Frontrun VC appears under three keys: its startup database, its site, and its posts on X. The API's sources and source_links fields show which sources listed each company and where.

The companies, their discoveries, funding rounds, investors, and the evidence behind each field live in a private Postgres schema (vc_radar). The public API reads from it and serves only records whose status is active.

Where amounts come from

A company's amount is the amount of its most recent funding round. The raise_provider field says how that amount was found:

Source listing (scan): the fundraising source listed the amount, and the source URL is the listing itself.
News headline (google-news) and company website (website): the amount was unknown after scanning, and the enrichment pipeline found it. The source URL is the article or page.
Manual review (agent-review): a reviewer confirmed or corrected a match the pipeline had held back. The source URL is the page the reviewer cited.

The table counts amounts that have a source URL. 9 amounts in the snapshot have none, so they appear on the site without a SOURCE link and are left out of every table on this blog.

How the enrichment pipeline matches headlines

The funding pipeline (scripts/enrich-funding.mjs) is scheduled to run daily. It only looks at companies whose rounds have no known amount, and it tries three providers in order of trust:

The company's own website. Only first-person or self-named claims count, such as "we raised" or "announcing our seed round". Customer quotes and logo walls do not.
Google News headlines, where the company must be the subject of the raise.
The round's source page, to record that a source lists the amount as undisclosed.

A news headline only counts when it matches one of two shapes: <Name> raises <amount> (with verbs like secures, lands, closes, or emerges from stealth with), or <Name>: <amount> Seed…. On top of that:

Headlines about debt, loans, credit facilities, IPOs, bonds, grants, donations, token sales, buybacks, or contracts are rejected as not venture rounds.
An amount described as a valuation is not a raise. For raises $100M at $4B valuation the pipeline keeps the first number, and it skips an amount followed directly by "valuation" or "market cap".
Brand names keep their capital letter, so "Massachusetts town secures…" does not match a company called Town.
A capitalised word right before the name means a longer name. "Electric Twin raises…" is not a match for Twin.
Short or common one-word names collide constantly, so they also need topic words in the headline that fit the company's industry. For a robotics company that could be "robot", "hardware", or "humanoid".

Only high-confidence matches are written. Each write adds an evidence row with the provider, publisher, URL, headline, matching rule, pipeline version, and any competing amounts. Weaker matches go into a report for review instead. If a news lookup fails or is throttled, it is retried, and a lookup that still fails is not recorded as "no raise found".

When a reviewer spots a wrong amount, a reject command clears it and blocks the claim, meaning the same company with the same amount from any outlet, so a wire story repeated by other publishers cannot bring it back. A stats command reports how many amounts were applied and how many rejected, and the precision, per provider, publisher, matching rule, and pipeline version. That way accuracy is measured rather than assumed.

Review corrections

Some amounts that look like raises are not. The review on September 25, 2026 found valuations, acquisition prices, debt, trading volume, and figures quoted in tweets stored as funding rounds. The review script (scripts/apply-review.mjs) applies researched verdicts, and the code records the reviewer as an AI agent:

Suspicious large rounds. When the number was a valuation, it moves to a separate valuation field. When it was cumulative funding, belonged to another company, or was otherwise wrong, the real amount replaces it if known. Otherwise the amount is cleared, so the site shows it as unknown rather than wrong.
Held-back funding matches. Correct matches are written with the provider agent-review. Wrong ones become rejections that the pipeline will never propose again.
X accounts. A founder's personal account, or another company's account, stops being the company's primary handle, and the official handle takes its place.
Records that are not startups. Records that turned out to be people get the status person. Other non-startups, such as an investment firm, are archived. The API serves only active records, so both drop off the site.

Every correction writes an evidence row with the previous value, the verdict, a note, and the source URL, so it can be audited and rolled back.

The pipeline also keeps watching for this kind of error. Its report lists large early-stage amounts that review has not confirmed yet: 100 million USD or more at an unknown, pre-seed, seed, or stealth stage, 250 million or more at Series A, and 500 million or more at any stage. Treat such figures with care until you have checked the source.

Known limitations

Stage labels come from the sources, and outlets do not agree on what counts as seed. Some very large "seed" rounds on Recent Funding are labelled that way by the source.
Only the latest round shows as the company's amount. The API's /api/v1/companies/{slug} endpoint returns every round.
The same company can appear twice when two sources spell its name differently (for example "Orthogonal" and "Orthogonal (YC W26)").
A missing amount means unknown, not zero or undisclosed.

Check it yourself

The same data is available through the public API. Each company's raise_source_url, raise_publisher, and raise_provider fields tell you where its amount came from. If you find an amount that its source does not support, the evidence trail described above means it can be corrected without losing the record of what changed.

On September 26, 2026, Recent Funding listed 185 companies at seed stage and 196 at pre-seed. For 160 of the seed companies and 44 of the pre-seed ones, the latest round has an amount with a source link. Those rounds are ranked below.

How to read these tables

Stage is the company's stage as Recent Funding lists it, which comes from the sources. Outlets do not agree on where seed ends, so a few very large rounds are labelled seed.
Amount is the company's latest recorded round. Each amount links to the article or listing it came from, and the Source column names the publisher or site.
Announced is the round date in the data, or n/a when there is none.
Amounts without a source URL are left out. How Recent Funding sources funding data explains where amounts come from.

That record is Shepherd's $42M round. Three details are worth noting:

amount_usd is a decimal string, not a number, so large values never lose precision. Convert it with Number() when you need arithmetic.
raise_source_url is where the amount came from. If you display an amount, link to it.
next_offset is not null, so there are more results.

Paging through everything

Pages hold up to 2000 companies (limit, default 100). Keep requesting with offset set to the previous next_offset until it comes back null:

Offsets are positions in a list that grows as Recent Funding finds new companies, and the default newest sort puts new ones first. If you page slowly, a company can shift across a page boundary. For a consistent export, page quickly, or sort with sort=oldest so that new companies land at the end.

One company, every round

Company objects carry only the latest round. To get the full history, fetch the company by its slug:

This returns {"company": {...}, "rounds": [...]}. Each round has stage, amount_usd (null when unknown), announced_at, and its own source_url, source_publisher, and source_provider. An unknown slug returns a 404.

A feed of recent rounds

/api/v1/rounds lists rounds that have an amount, newest first. Use it for a "who raised this week" digest:

It also accepts stage (the round's own stage), crypto, limit (up to 500), and offset. Each round names the company (slug, name) and lists the investors linked to that round.

Stats

This returns total, crypto, and with-amount counts, plus by_stage, by_industry, and by_source arrays of {key, count}, largest first. They are computed from the same rows /api/v1/companies returns, so the numbers agree. Use by_industry to build a filter menu.

Errors

Every error has the same shape and a matching HTTP status:

The possible codes are:

invalid_parameter (400): a value is out of range or has the wrong format, or a parameter is repeated.
unknown_parameter (400): the API does not recognise a parameter, so a typo like ?stag=seed fails loudly instead of returning unfiltered data.
not_found (404): unknown slug or path.
method_not_allowed (405): anything other than GET, HEAD, or OPTIONS.
unavailable (503): the database is temporarily unavailable. Retry with a backoff.

Showing amounts responsibly

Amounts come from source listings, news headlines, company websites, and manual review. The raise_provider field (or source_provider on rounds) says which. Some sources call a round seed when others would not, and a few amounts are later corrected. When you show a figure, link it to raise_source_url, as Recent Funding does:

Fair use

There is no key and no hard rate limit today. Please keep automated traffic modest: cache responses for at least as long as their Cache-Control header says, and fetch the whole dataset at most a few times a day. Any future limits will be documented in the API docs.

Y Combinator companies on Recent Funding

As of September 26, 2026, Recent Funding links 153 active companies to Y Combinator. Most were added recently: 150 of them were first seen on or after August 1, 2026. Only 18 have a funding amount with a source link, so this post is mostly a directory rather than a ranking of rounds.

How a company counts as YC-backed

Recent Funding uses the same rule on the site, in the API's accelerator=yc filter, and in this post. A company counts when either:

one of its investors is named Y Combinator, or
its name or description mentions Y Combinator, @ycombinator, or a batch code such as "YC S26". A batch code right after someone else's handle, such as "@founder (YC S24)", is ignored, because it usually describes a founder's earlier company.

This is a detection rule, not a list published by Y Combinator. A company that never mentions YC and has no investor record will be missed.
