Stealth startup founders: who is building in stealth, and how to find them
What "Founder at Stealth Startup" means, how to work out who a stealth founder is and what they are building, and the founders of startups Recent Funding flagged in stealth, with the round each company announced after.
"Founder at Stealth Startup" is one of the most common job titles on LinkedIn, and one of the least informative. It says someone has left their last job to build something, and nothing else. This post covers what that title usually means, the public signals that show who a stealth founder is before the company announces anything, and the founders behind startups Recent Funding flagged while they were still in stealth.
The data is the Recent Funding snapshot of September 29, 2026: 16583 companies, 897 of them flagged in stealth, and 71 named founders at 34 of those flagged companies.
What "stealth startup founder" means
A stealth startup is a company that is building without saying publicly what it does. Its founders usually know exactly what they are building; they are keeping it quiet on purpose. The common reasons:
- Before the round. Many founders stay quiet until a seed or pre-seed round closes, then announce the company and the round together.
- Recruiting from a current employer. A founder who plans to hire former colleagues often waits until they have left.
- Competition and pivots. A team still testing ideas may not want a public name tied to one of them.
So the title "Founder, Stealth Startup" (or "Stealth Mode", "Building something new") is a timing signal, not a secret. Most of these companies announce themselves within months.
How to find out who a stealth founder is
No single source names stealth founders, but several public signals line up, and the same ones Recent Funding uses:
- A new X account that the right people follow. A company's X handle often exists months before its website says anything. When experienced investors and founders start following a new account, it is usually a company, and the founders are among the first accounts it follows.
- Accelerator batches. Programs such as a16z speedrun, Alliance, Entrepreneur First and ERA list their companies and founders when a batch is announced, often before the companies raise. Most of the founders below were first listed on one of those pages.
- A domain and a landing page. A new domain with a one-line page and an email capture is a typical stealth footprint.
- LinkedIn titles. Several people changing their titles to the same stealth company in the same week usually means a founding team.
- The funding announcement. Eventually the round is announced, and the founders are named in it. That is the point where a stealth founder stops being one.
Founders flagged before their company announced a round
These are the founders of companies that were flagged in stealth before their latest round was announced: 29 founders at 13 companies. The flag date is when the company was flagged; the announced date is the round's public date, with the amount linked to its source.
Take Space: it was flagged on July 29, 2026 and announced $2.4M at pre-seed on August 18, three weeks later, with its three founders already listed. Primitive Labs was flagged on July 1 and announced $785K in mid-August. Both founding teams are listed on their accelerator's page, which is where their names came from.
Every founder at a flagged startup
The wider list: every named founder at a company Recent Funding flagged in stealth, newest flag first. Some of these companies had raised before they were flagged (a flag can come after an earlier round, when the company goes quiet again to build something new), so the round shown is simply the latest one on record.
Most flagged teams here list two founders, usually a CEO and a CTO, and most founder records link to a LinkedIn profile. Each row links to the page the founder was listed on.
How long founders stay in stealth
For the 243 companies flagged before their latest round was announced, the median gap from flag to announcement is 70 days. Some are much longer: USD.AI was flagged in December 2025 and announced $40M in September 2026. The table on stealth startups is updated daily and shows the newest flags.
